Why This Skin Resurfacing Treatment Is The New Laser Alternative

By Charmaine Lee (

A treatment that does it all—shrinks pores, tightens loose and saggy skin, lightens hyperpigmentation, and is suitable for all skin types and tones

Move over lasers, there is a new skin resurfacing treatment in town: NeoGen Plasma. How does this novel treatment stack up against tried-and-tested lasers such as CO2 or fractional lasers? We ask Dr Lee Mun Heng, founder of Cambridge Medical Group, all about the NeoGen Plasma treatment, and how exactly it can help you achieve a younger, tauter complexion

What is NeoGen Plasma technology and how does it work? Dr Lee Mun Heng (LMH)

Firstly, NeoGen Plasma is not a laser. Lasers are light-based devices, while NeoGen Plasma energy is generated from the conversion of nitrogen gas into plasma energy. This plasma energy is emitted from the hand-piece in controlled pulses to heat the skin up rapidly. A non-ablative treatment, NeoGen Plasma can resurface the skin without any breakage to the top layer of skin. This decreases the risk of infection, possible bleeding, and prolonged downtime. Instead, the treated epidermis acts as a natural dressing to provide protection and speed healing, shedding only when new, healthy skin has formed underneath.

What aesthetic concerns can NeoGen Plasma treat and what are the expected results? LMH NeoGen Plasma energy helps rejuvenate skin through resurfacing and the stimulation of collagen—think of it as a safer and non-surgical alternative to a blepharoplasty or a facelift. Some treatable conditions include sun damage (hyperpigmentation and wrinkles), fine lines, visible pores, active acne and acne scars. Those who suffer from saggy or loose skin around the eye area or droopy eyelids are also good candidates for the treatment. You can expect to see tighter, smoother, and more youthful‑looking skin, with less visible fine lines and wrinkles.

Is there any expected downtime? LMH Energist, the manufacturers of the device provide certain protocols to treat patients who wish to achieve eye or skin rejuvenation with reportedly minimal downtime and without any disruption to their daily activities. However, do note that although there’s no damage to the surface skin, some patients may experience very slight exfoliation as collagen production is stimulated and new skin emerges. That said, most patients don’t notice this. For patients requiring more dramatic results some protocols may have 2 to 7 days social down time.

What are the advantages of NeoGen Plasma as compared to other skin resurfacing treatments? LMH Certain lasers are often deemed unsuitable for those with darker skin. NeoGen Plasma energy however is “colour blind”, which can be an advantage for patients of various ethnicities wanting skin rejuvenation. Neogen does not char the skin, nor does it make contact and leave dots like electrostatic contact devices (“plasma pen” for instance).

How long does one session last, and how many sessions are needed on average? LMH Each session takes 15 to 30min, and depending on the condition being treated and settings used, patients may require five to six sessions every two to three weeks.

Can NeoGen Plasma technology be combined with any other aesthetic treatments? LMH Post-treatment, there’s an increased permeability of the skin barrier. This means any topical preparations are more readily absorbed through the skin, which helps enable faster recovery, and allows for combination therapies.
